Help for children with autism and learning difficulties

Woodside School in Bexley supports 215 children with Autism and learning difficulties. A donation of £2,700 from the Axis Foundation has enabled the school to launch two new extra-curricular clubs; an art club and a Tae Kwando club. Both after-school activities will provide an outlet for children to express their energy and creativity and encourage them to build new friendships with their peers.

The school approached the Axis Foundation after their Government funding was cancelled, removing their ability to provide engaging extracurricular activities.

“In addition to the challenges our pupils face with their disabilities, most come from families deemed as financially disadvantaged, which adds additional barriers to them accessing activities outside of school.” Audrey Chamberlain Head Teacher, Woodside School

Both clubs have enjoyed excellent attendance and feedback from the school is that the classes have been well received by the children, and the students who attend regularly have shown improvement in behaviour.

“Both the Art and Tae Kwando after school clubs have now started and the children are enthusiastic and very keen to take part. We used the donation given by the Axis Foundation to buy IT equipment for the art club and safety equipment for the Tae Kwando club which has helped massively.The children are very much enjoying the two new clubs and we couldn’t have done this without the help of The Axis Foundation. Providing multiple sclerosis support

The Kings College Hospital Multiple Sclerosis charity is dedicated in providing multiple sclerosis support. With over 100,000 people living with MS in the UK it’s crucial charities like this exist.

The charity provides suffers with vital support with specialist nurses and doctors trained to help sufferers live as active a lifestyle as possible. Through the charity, they also access to all the professional advice and information that will help them make the right choices for them.

The MS Trust is the definitive source of information for people affected by MS and is the primary provider of education for MS health care professionals.
The Axis Foundation donated a grand sum of £17,000 to the charity through matching the funds raised at an Axis charity disco and from the generous donations of Axis employees. The funding will contribute to palliative care for people with advanced MS.

“MS is a cruel and unpredictable disease,” explained Axis’ Claire Richardson, who knows first-hand the effects of the disease. “The research into better management of MS and support for people affected by the disease makes a real difference to the lives of those living with it.”

Community youth project reduces anti-social behaviour

Myddleton Grange Residents community youth project  aims to reduce anti-social behaviours in young people and also to project young residents from gang-related attacks. They want to offer a safe and friendly environment for teenagers to learn important life skills.

The Axis Foundation answered the association’s plea to help make their estate a safer environment for all – by donating an initial £1,000 to cover thirty-two hours of a qualified youth worker’s time.

The donation to the Myddleton Grange Youth Project will contribute to a variety of activities for children aged 10-19, through 2 three hour weekly sessions, as well as weekend residential adventure schemes for older children.

Around 35 children use the youth project, half of whom are under 15, and while they are occupied the entire estate of around 400 households feel the benefit.
The donation from the Axis Foundation will allow for a wider scope of activities and greater capacity to engage with more youngsters, by funding trained workers to lead art/craft, dance, sport, drama and music classes. As well as the Youth club, this local community association also provides residents with a baby & toddler group, social events, organising training in areas such as First Aid, Safeguarding and Food Hygiene.

Sensory garden for children with complex learning needs

Corbets Tey School is a school for children and young people aged 4 to 19 with Complex Learning Needs. There are 155 students at Corbets Tey, all with special educational needs including communication and interaction difficulties, sensory and physical needs and autism.

Children here will benefit from a sensory garden funded by Swan Housing and The Axis Foundation. The materials for the project were joint-funded by a donation of £5,000 from the Axis Foundation and Swan Housing Group. The sensory garden has several beds and paths, all providing different sensory experiences. As the pupils move through the garden, they will experience a range of sights, sounds, smells and feelings.

“This a wonderful project and we are indebted to everyone who took part. The sensory garden will offer a significant improvement to the school’s facilities. The children will benefit from having a wonderful new environment to develop in a multitude of ways.
