The Nest

Sweeter sleep for families facing severe financial hardship

The Nest supports families with young children who are facing severe financial hardship. Their aim is simple: to ensure every child has the best possible start in life and that no baby sleeps without safe, suitable essentials.

The Axis Foundation has donated £3,000 to The Nest to purchase 30 cot mattresses, 35 cot-bed mattresses and 35 Moses basket mattresses.

“Wow, thank you so very much. We are so grateful for this incredibly generous support. As a small charity it is extremely hard to secure funding, and this donation will make a life-changing difference to the families we help. Thanks to the Axis Foundation, we can ensure babies across our community have a safe and healthy place to sleep including baby who is currently sleeping on a pillow which is less than ideal safety wise” – Victoria Blythe, CEO

The new mattresses will have a powerful impact on families across Bath and North East Somerset. They will give up to 100 babies and young children a safe, hygienic and supportive place to sleep—reducing the risk of SIDS, preventing exposure to mould or bedbugs, and improving posture and comfort. Better sleep will also benefit parents and siblings who are often sharing beds or sleeping on floors due to lack of resources.

Mayfield School

Sensory stimulation for children with multiple learning difficulties

Mayfield School is a large Special Needs School in Torbay. Of their 180 pupils, many have Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD).

The Axis Foundation was delighted to approve an application for support with a donation of £11,091 to help the Friends of Mayfield School buy media projectors which support sensory stimulation and learning.

“We are grateful to the Axis Foundation for awarding a grant to Mayfield School. Your donation will be used to purchase a set of media projectors for the Immersive (sensory) room.

“The projectors will create a wrap-around effect when used alongside edge blending software and Showmagic software allows different themes and environments to be used (both software is included). Wrap around projections allow children to be ‘in’ the ocean when learning about the ocean, for example.

“Thanks to your support we are closer to launching a new and immersive sensory environment, harnessing the power of technology to support sensory stimulation and learning, especially for our children with profound and multiple learning difficulties” – Adam Tapp, Treasurer

The new sensory rooms will support up to 460 children over their lifetime, offering a calming, accessible space for pupils, families and community groups. They promote cognitive and language development, emotional regulation, reduced anxiety, social interaction and creativity. By providing a safe, soothing environment, the rooms help children build resilience, confidence and essential communication skills.

Christ Church CofE Primary School, Greenwich

Funding an accessible toilet for SEND children

Christ Church CofE Primary School (Parents and Friends Association) applied to the Axis Foundation for help converting an outdated toilet block into a much-needed sensory room and wheelchair-accessible toilet.

The school (which is located in Greenwich, south east London) supports 210 pupils – 62 of whom are on the SEND Register, including 11 children with EHCPs. As there is no dedicated quiet or sensory space currently on site, the new facilities will provide vital support for children with additional needs.

“Wow — thank you so much! We are absolutely thrilled to have your support. The Axis Foundation’s generous donation towards our sensory room and accessible toilet is about so much more than bricks and mortar — it’s a promise to our pupils that their needs truly matter. Hamble Independent Lifeboat

Saving Lives of Those in Peril on the Sea…

Hamble Independent Lifeboat saves lives in the busy waters of the Solent and Southampton Water.

The two lifeboats, Harry Childs and John and Violet Hurrel, hold the proud record of being the fifth busiest in the UK, last year attending 125 calls by the UK Coastguard and saving 17 lives.

Our Trustees were delighted to help out with a grant of £3,400 to enable them to purchase 10 new Gecko Safety Helmets for their 27 active crew and many members of the public who they assist each year.

“A massive thanks to you and your fellow Trustees for agreeing to award Hamble Lifeboat this grant. PPE is vital for the safety of our crew members and safety helmets are part of that requirement. We save lives year on year and rely 100% on fund raising to continue to operate the service. Without the generous support of businesses like yourselves – and our volunteers – this service would not be able to continue. We are humbled and grateful” – Tim Adams, Bosun

Manchester Urban Diggers

Creating places for people to grow, cook and eat food together

Manchester Urban Diggers produces over 1 tonne of food annually at their main site: Platt Fields Market Garden. Here local people develop a wide range of horticulture skills, connect with others, increase their physical activity, share food, learn about sustainable food growing and get involved in developing ideas and projects.

The Trustees of the Axis Foundation were delighted to award Manchester Urban Diggers a grant of £7,000 to build an integrated water harvesting and automatic irrigation system.

This will help them reduce environmental impact, costs and labour, improve the experience of beneficiaries and staff, and model best-practice of low-input, sustainable agroecological food growing methods.

“We are absolutely thrilled and thankful to receive the generous donation from the Axis Foundation. We’ve started ordering and receiving the irrigation system and will be installing it as soon as we can – the recent weather shows you just how important this technology is going to be this year and the years ahead. We spend hundreds of hours a year keeping our plants alive and this system will dramatically reduce this – meaning we can produce more food and deliver more free community services/events” – Sam Payne, Director

More about Manchester Urban Diggers

Through growing, cooking and eating food, Manchester Urban Diggers improves the environment and personal wellbeing, and strengthens local communities.

Platt Fields Market Garden is also the home of MUD Kitchen where they operate a café to generate an income to help run the garden. MUD Kitchen also operates its own catering service which is open 7 days a week running seasonal fresh food around the city.
